Role: Market & Program Manager
Hours of Work: Part-time variable. ~20 hours/month in winter & 20-25 hours/week during summer
Compensation: $28/hour
Location: LFM Office in Golden with the option of remote work, and on site at the Market
The Golden Farmers Market is the primary program operated by Local Food Matters and will constitute the majority of the responsibilities of this role. Other programs include the Glean Golden Communal Harvest Program and the Annual Seed Swap with significant additional opportunities for program growth. The Program Manager Role encompasses both administration as well as further development of these and other new programs.
MARKET MANAGEMENT
The Golden Farmers Market promotes a vibrant local food culture by providing a community platform for the sale of locally produced agricultural & artisanal products.
Our goal is to create a vibrant, bustling community hub in which vendor small businesses thrive and community members come together around food & art. In addition, we also seek to run effective programs to advance the resiliency of our local food system in Golden and Area A.
MARKET MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Providing administration of market logistics
Facilitating the set-up of each market
Managing the Market Program Budget
Soliciting sponsorships and other revenues to support the Market and its programs
Managing the Farmers Market Nutrition Coupon program
Managing Farmers Market Musicians
Promoting the Market, it’s programs, partnerships, events, vendors & products on social media & the LFM Website
Working with the LFM ED & Farmers Market Advisory Committee on Market Policies and other administrative and strategic priorities
Managing the Farmers Market Ambassador Volunteer program
Collecting and tracking visitor data
Collecting and tracking vendor revenue data
PROGRAM MANAGEMENT
GLEAN GOLDEN
Officially launched in Summer 2024, the Glean Golden Communal Harvest Program organizes volunteers to harvest unwanted fruit from backyard trees in and around Golden, and distributes the fruit to community members. In partnership with SD6 and Golden Secondary School, gleaned apples are brought to the Foods Class at the high school and processed into Apply Chips to be distributed as a healthy school snack. Based on learnings from the start up year it is the desire of Local Food Matters to develop this program to further manage community fruit trees for better fruit production, including winter pruning and integrated pest management.
GLEAN GOLDEN RESPONSIBILITIES
Co-design the next phase of this program development in collaboration with LFM Executive Director
Seek and acquire additional and alternate funding avenues for the long-term operation of this program
Manage program budget & develop a work plan that fits within that budget
Manage Program operations including:
Build & maintain the Fruit Tree Registry and manage relations with fruit tree owners
Recruit & manage volunteer fruit pickers
Be responsible for the picking, sorting, storing and processing of the gleaned fruit
Maintain strong relationships with key players from the local school district to develop and manage an Apple Chip School Snack program
Maintain strong distribution pathways with the Golden Food Bank and local ranchers
Maintain detailed records of harvests, volunteers and distribution
Develop and implement an Apple Fest event as a component of the Fall Faire to celebrate and promote the local fruit harvest
Prepare necessary funder reporting
SEED SWAP
The Annual Seed Swap event is in it’s 8th year in Golden, and has been operated as an arms-length, volunteer coordinated event supported by LFM. In 2025 the Seed Swap will officially become a program operated by Local Food Matters with event management a responsibility of our Program Manager. The purpose of this event is to support the resilience of local gardens with locally produced seed varieties, and to support local gardeners with resources, a network of gardeners, and resilient seed varieties. While the 2025 Seed Swap event will have already occurred at the time of on-boarding for this position, responsibility for following years events will include the following:
SEED SWAP RESPONSIBILITIES
Coordinate event logistics including event promotions
Recruit and coordinate volunteers
Solicit seed donations and coordinate seed prep
Further develop seed exchange program including exploration of the potential of a seed library in Golden
Solicit grant and other funding to support program development
Develop and manage a program budget
Report on successes and challenges to ED
Prepare relevant funder reporting
